Via their recent school of DJ-ing, Badilika DJs gave the world but a glimpse of their colossal dream of music ministry in Africa. The goal? To traverse the so-called dark continent of Africa, brightening it up with message of Christ through a large and well-trained army of ministering DJs Meet DJs Jey and Kim, the brains behind Badilika School of DJ-ing. In collaboration with K-Krew, Samehewa DJs and other independent DJs, they put together Kenya’s very first Christian DJ Academy.
DJs Jey & Kim From the 16th to the 27th of October 2006, students sat at the feet of some of this region’s leading lights. The training curriculum covered Introduction to DJing, cueing, pitching and beat counting – taught by Badilika DJs themselves, event management, music genres and beat matching by K-Krew’s popular DJs Soxxy and Moz, while DJ Liz (formally Mo Sound Entertainment) covered sound management and scratching. Students also got a treat from DJ Jamo of Samehewa Entertainment, who schooled them on the versatile technological aspects of PC DJ-ing.
DJs Soxxy DJ Liz Students also got a fair share of the word of God from various preachers who gave morning devotions on a daily basis. Devotions were led by Pastor Nick Korir, youth minister Parklands Baptist Church, Pastor Desmond, and Pastor Ewagata, formerly of Eastleigh Deliverance Church, among others. There were a total of twenty one students who successfully completed the training, with the first graduation ceremony being held on the 28th October 2006 outside the Education Facility at Parklands Baptist. Various guests were in attendance, including family and friends of the graduating students, as well as Parklands Baptist and host pastor Ambrose Odongo, youthful ODM politician Tony Gachoka and Easy FM radio presenter Gladys Gachanja.
Grad Class of 2006 Tony Gachoka Takes it Easy The day’s MC and Badilika DJs colleague Kefa got graduation proceedings underway at just after 11 am with a session of worship. And true to the spirit of the event, worship was led by a DJ on the turntables, churning out songs of adoration and praise. Pastor Ambrose briefly shared the word of God from I Timothy 4:12
“Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity”
His message encouraged the graduands to keep fanning the flame that was in them, and ensure to not neglect the gift in them – it had been placed in them by the Creator of Heaven and earth and they should not let anyone despise their youth. On hand to support and perform were a number of Gospel artists, including rappers MOG, up-coming ragga act Kevo Yout and Coast-based songbird Krystn Ndela. The graduating students also got a chance to showcase their newly acquired skills on the wheels of steel, as the seasoned DJs from K-Krew and Badilika DJs observed from a distance.
Rappers MOG Ragga Act Kevo Yout Krystn Ndela Tony Gachoka praised Badilika DJs for their venture and pledged to support them by providing a platform for the DJs to showcase their talents. With the political temperatures in the country heating up, he could scarcely avoid mentioning his ODM affiliation while urging all present to shun tribalism and engage in meaningful politics in order to enact the desired change in Kenya. Badilika DJs front-man DJ Jey then took the opportunity to share his organization’s dream with the gathering. He spoke of their desire to create change in the entertainment industry by training DJs and empowering them to minister the word of God through music. He also asked the graduands to strive excel in the DJ field while still setting an example of righteous living. The actual conferring of certificates took place shortly after, with Tony Gachoka presenting papers to the graduands. One by one they took to the stage and proudly received their ‘power to spin’. Mwafrika.com was well represented by its very own Sam Mburu, who was among the top in his class. Speaking of which, John Mutiso, much better known to the Mwafrika.com discussion forum members as Tismo, secured first place, with a whooping average of just over 93%. A little impromptu bonus cash from Tony Gachoka surely got Tismo some admirers.

Tismo’s Proud Father Was On Hand As Badilika DJs look to confer certificates to more African people, they are looking forward to the 11th to the 22nd of December 2006, when they will spread their wings to the Coast. From then, it’s off to Uganda and then to Rwanda, then who knows, maybe even to the ends of the earth. Look out for Badilika DJs, they are definitely going places.
