January 9, Mavuno Church - The local Gospel rap industry is lighting up. First it was Da' T.R.U.T.H. and just before we could recover from his top-rated throw-down (CLICK HERE for that recap), his friend Flame was already setting Nairobi on fire. The Stellar award winner and former Cross Movement member was in town for the beginning of his international tour promoting his latest record, Captured.
Local acts were on hand to curtain raise, with DJ GG and Mr. T doing an excellent job of hyping up the crowd all afternoon. Some outstanding performances included Mad Love Lounge front-man Holy Dave, as well as regulars Xpo, Eko Dydda and Kamlesh. K-Krew DJs Moz and Johnnie Celeb factored in on the wheels of steels, as did DJ Krowbar and Octave. The last hours of the blazing afternoon were left for the main man to do what he does best...
Performing to a crowd of close to 1,000 fans jammed in the Mavuno Dome, Flame unleashed over twelve songs in about an hour and a half, capturing his audience with high energy and a mixture of his popular jams and some new ones from this latest album. Move, Captured, Surrender, Hold On and All of Me made the cut, as did Put Off The Old And Put On The New, Double Back and of course his biggest jam (at least locally) Joyful Noise. The popularity of this track disallowed him to perform it alone, inviting some of his excited audience to flow with him.
Yet the man did not let his pace and tempo jeopardize the intent of his mission. He managed to give a brief background for nearly half of the tracks he performed, sharing testimonies from his own life and urging true Christian living throughout the gig. With the kind of response he got, Flame’s message was certainly across, and Kenyan Christian rappers (and fans) would do well to heed his words even as they shout to his music.
