November 26, KICC – Here are proven ingredients to an absolutely electric event – Lots of space in a central location, thousands of ex-cans and the city’s top Gospel acts. That’s the exact recipe that System Unit threw into the pot in putting together one of the biggest ‘school over’ events in recent times.
Though the gig started a little later than mentioned, the program proved very impressive. It was evident that System Unit and Crossover 101, the event’s organizers, had taken their time to plan a packed program that would keep the crowd on their feet all night. This open-air idea had the advantage of attracting party hungry youngsters roaming in the CBD into the event.
On the decks were System Unit DJs Sadic and Mo who together with MCs Alemba and Vyerra started and kept the event on an upward spiral, seeming never to tire. But if the MCs were good at their job, the performances from our local acts were even more electrifying, keeping an enthusiastic crowd dancing and singing all night.
From Ringtone, to Rufftone, MC Dice and Mr V, there was no gap of entertainment. When recent star Alice Kamande stepped on stage, the crowd went wild as she sang three of her singles, crowning it with Hakuna Mwingine.Multi-award winning Eunice Njeri got pretty much the same reception, rounding off her triple set in worship with the popular single, Najua. System Unit’s own Hey-Z and Alemba also impressed, giving energetic performances worthy of their youthful fans.
As has almost become customary, screams rent the air as Groove Award winner Eko Dydda got on stage, and kept up as the crowd sang along to everyone of his songs. He was soon joined by Holy Dave on that all-time favorite Niko Na Reason, before they gave way to yet another extra dynamic duo, Daddy Owen and Dunco. Owen’s newest single, Saluti, obviously one of Nairobi’s current favorites, had the crowd jamming in tune.
In between the musicians, the dancers were also well represented. The likes of Undignified, Alabaster, Detour, Igniters, and Saints turned up with stunning dance moves, catching the crowd’s attention whenever they stepped on stage and left them cheering when they got off.
Although the party had to come to an unexpected end when it started drizzling , Class Over 2010 was a truly successful and enjoyable gift to the ex-cans, and an excellent precursor to a month that is likely to be filled with exceptional gigs.
