Desperation - George Oloo | Print |  E-mail
Image It’s a bad thing to be desperate. You come off as weak and dependent, like you couldn’t find another option. You are probably hopeless, and in your eyes, only the one you’re desperate for can help you. If he somehow doesn’t, you’re done for. It’s a bad thing to be desperate.

Why I Voted For Ng'ang'alito - Phyllis Njoki | Print |  E-mail
Image You’re probably throwing shoes and booing at the title, but I’m not worried. I know you’ll be throwing roses once I’m done. I congratulate you for being open minded and reading this. It’s no secret that those 12 in the TPF 3 house were not the best musicians that the 4 countries had to offer. David Kuria helped us deal with that a while ago and we are in agreement.

Fast Food (A True Story) - Meshack Yobby | Print |  E-mail
Image Definition: Fast food is cheap, can be dispensed quickly and disastrous in the long run. Examples include hamburgers, hot dogs, and some human beings.

It is about half past nine at night when I hear a knock on my door. It has to be a lady because the knock is soft. Before I go on, you should know that I am a single guy living in a single room whose only furniture is a bed. I open the door, and Sheila smiles sweetly at me, saying the finals of a big soccer tournament was on, but she had no radio to listen to the commentary, so could she come in? I opened the door.

A Place Called Eden - Sam Kithika | Print |  E-mail
Image In this precarious world that we call home, with its inconsistencies, pain and chaos, there is a place where me and you can find peace and refuge. It is a place known to many yet less visited by few. A place that joy unspeakable is found and proper and accurate perspective is established. A place where me and you are accepted, not on the basis of our merit or religious piety, but on pure grace and favour are we welcomed in these realm.

When Running Gets Tough - Meshack Yobby | Print |  E-mail

Image Kenya must surely be the only country that welcomed its DEAFlympics team with SINGING, but I stand to be corrected. Kenyan athletes do not run- mmmh mmmh. They flee. I know because I have lived in Eldoret, quite near their training camps. I have watched in bewilderment as they sped past a walking me in the name of jogging. I have watched the intensity in their faces as they speak of winning gold medals and setting world records.

Unequally Yoked - John Kigada | Print |  E-mail
Image In an article published on Saturday July 25, 2009 in The Standard newspaper, “Mwangi Muiruri spoke to pop singer queen Jayne Nyambura and her born- again husband James Kariuki on the survival of their unusual marriage.  Kariuki says “what matters in a love relationship [are] not social, economic or political inclinations, but whether there is real “bonding”.”

5 Artists I Miss - David Kuria | Print |  E-mail

Image There are many beautiful things about today’s local Gospel music scene. It's vibrant. It's diverse. It's dominant. We really are living in Gospel's good old days. Gone are the days when one or two Gospel artists soared high above the rest, absolutely dwarfing the ‘competition’. Artists, DJs, Videographers and producers are multiplying so fast, it’s hard to keep up. It’s a great time!

Yet here's the irony. The faster the wheels spin, the easier it is to fall off the carousel. It’s almost like “you snooze you lose”. Stay silent for all of twenty seconds, and not only have you been forgotten - someone’s sitting in your chair. A hit today; an afterthought tomorrow.

The Project Fame Puzzle - David Kuria | Print |  E-mail

davidkuria OK, the tears have dried up. I laughed myself into a near coma as I caught the early rounds of Tusker Project Fame 3. Seriously, when it comes to pure unadulterated comic relief, Top Comic has nothing on this show – its humor pH is through the roof.

So you can imagine my relief when we got to the business end of the show. The final 12. Phew! Or so I thought!

Insectophobia - Meshack Yobby | Print |  E-mail
Image If there is such a word as insectophobia, then that is what I have. I have a fright of any insect that is fast and looks like it can bite. No, I am not a coward. I do not fear the larger animals like snakes, cows and dogs. Except, of course, if they are on heat. It is the little things that matter most to me.

Gospel Music: An Opinion - John Kigada | Print |  E-mail
Image The gospel music industry in Kenya has diversity but no unity.  Deejays have formed alliances that are perceived to promote specific artists.  Concerts done in churches without promotion from a certain radio station will only attract members of that assembly.  Largely, broadcasting of Gospel music is at the discretion of disbelievers.  Scatter brain, discordant, emotional and unskilled “worship leaders” privileged by youth pastors easily dominate youth worship services in Nairobi churches.
