SPA-Fest Preliminaries | Print |  E-mail

April 26, ICC - If there was a dance-o-meter, a sort of measure to gauge the level of dance talent available on Kenya’s Gospel scene, the annual SPA-Fest would be it. With the din of a screaming audience and almost impossible to please judges, this year’s preliminaries were indicators of just how high the standard can go in performing arts. On the decks, K-Krew's DJs Soxxy and Johnie Celeb kept the music streaming, feeding the party.

First there were the expected impossible-to-imitate dance routines from the likes of Igniters, God Chasers and Heartbreakerz; then the incredibly creative dances from Crazy 4 Christ and Spartans, the latter doing a medley of African-American Sunday morning favorites, complete with the 60's dressing and swing moves that would have made Al Sharpton proud.

And then there was the singing (A moment of silence is absolutely needful for this one). To give a background view, SPA-Fest is essentially a dance competition. However, the dance teams have to prepare material in two other areas as well – Bible trivia and song.  What happens when you ask dancers to sing is worth writing two pages home about. A cacophony of sounds, smatterings of creativity and downright hilarious performances were witnessed in this section - along with some impressive singing, of course. From Detour to RQ and Undignified to ICED, entertainment was never lacking.

New-comers Movers, from Good Shepherd church in Langata, won the upcoming teams category, while Saints caused a minor upset in the professional teams category, winning it by 59%. At the end of the day though, only five teams from each of the two categories (professional and upcoming teams) could make it through to the finals. But the show did leave its audience with more than a huge appetite for the final showdown, slated for the night of June 1st. That's a ticket to book in a hurry!

Here now is the list of teams and their performance in the various categories. Top five teams qualify for the finals.
