'Keeping It Real' Gig Rocks | Print |  E-mail

May 18 – Safari Park - Explosive sound, a tireless crowd and top-notch performances are the main ingredients needed for a good gig. Throw in a special venue, creative MC-ing, and DJs hot on the decks and you have a party event worth attending. The Keeping It Real concert promised all this and delivered quite a show.

Things started on a high (and right on time, too) with a teaser from the Citylights Dancers, before the day’s MCs got on stage dressed in…well, a mixture of night dresses and shower attire, complete with towels and toothbrushes. Talk about keeping it real!

It was obvious from the start that the event was going to be jam-driven, with live DJ mixes keeping the crowd on the dance floor half the time. On the decks were DJs Sanch, Krowbar and GG, who kept the variety flowing – from local music to hip-hop and ragga – and did a mighty fine job of it. Not only was the music the afternoon’s backbone, the DJs proved apt at using it to plug hitches in the programme (a scratched CD, some artist missing…), working to give the event an energy-high flow.

Performances were no let-down either (most of them anyway). Worship leader Rebekah Dawn brought praise to the party with two of her recently released tracks, Battle is the Lord’s and the chart-topping Milele. Groove winner Juliani was greeted with screams and went ahead to give a top-notch account of himself, taking time to free-style rhymes before dropping Mtaa Mentality.

Other artists included Godcydaz, OJ & Smith as well as 2nd Chance. Citylights Dancers put up impressive choreography on the popular ragga jam Holy Ghost Party and Lecrae’s Get Low, while Bethel Dancers entertained with a ragga mix that (to the crowd’s delight) included Isaac Blackman’s Ceiling. The day’s activities would not be complete without a word, this one delivered by Pastor James Okumu, urging believers to live a ‘real’ life worthy of their calling. A poor choice of performers at the end almot gave the event an anti-climatic ending, but the day was saved by a pumped up dance that finished the concert in cheers.

In all, Keeping It Real turned out to be a very enjoyable and fulfilling afternoon, and just the perfect way to end the weekend.
