June 1, NPC Karen – The much anticipated SPA Fest finals were finally here. With participating teams displaying sheer talent and ability, it was a night full of revelation, surprise, joy, tears and yes, of course, dances. NPC Karen was the location for battle royale and fight they did. It was obvious the judges were going to have a difficult time picking winners this night – such was the competition for the ultimate cash prize of sh.120,000 up for grabs.

The hours of sleepless nights of practice began to show through the moment the teams got on stage. From Igniters, Moverz, and Crazy for Christ to Rhema and Undignified; from Impact, Iced and Spartans to Heartbreakerz and Saints, they all put their best foot forward. The dance groups really deserve kudos for creativity in choreography – everything was tried. Some went the old-skul way, some traditional dances mirrored acrobatic stunts, and some even took the audience back to the days of primary schooling with their costume!

Dances aside, spin masters K-Krew , Riq and Krowbar were on the decks making sure the music was flawless. A surprise duet by Kora Award winner Neema and AFLEWO’s Kaberia, as well as the energetic trio of Juliani and (MOG’s) Tony and Kenti were welcome interruptions to the competition.

Drama, the other category for the night was a two-sided coin. On one hand, creative one-liners left the audience in stitches Consider this one, where the husband wanting to assert his authority told his wife, ‘In the absence of Jesus Christ, I’m the man of this house.’  On the other hand, drama also provided the night’s lowest moments, acting as a tempo killer most of the time. It was unfortunate that some members of the audience opted to show their displeasure by walking out or talking.

When all is said and done, someone had to take home the crown. Let it be said here that there were no losers, for everyone was a winner, seeing the effort and passion injected into the contest. The night’s judges finally picked Igniters as the overall winners in the professional category with Spartans following closely behind. In the upcoming groups category, Impact took the first prize, followed by Undignified.

This year’s competition had been harsher than ever before, and by the time the event ended on the morning of June 2nd, SPA Fest 2008 had certainly produced its best. Enjoy the scenes...
