Philip Mose | Print |  E-mail

The first thing that smacks you in the face when you meet Philip Mose is his disarming humility. A closer inspection reveals that it’s not only real, but also laced with a heart that’s passionate about what he does. There’s more – this twenty three year-old is as focused as they come. At a stage in life where most people are still searching for their purpose, Mose is sure about what direction God wants him to go, and he is busy working at it.

Image Philip Mose has announced his arrival as the latest addition to the local Gospel music scene with the scripture laced debut album, Dunia. The eight track project is produced at Hitscore Records by Gideon Kimanzi, and features a wide range of listening options; from the Lingala spiced Saa Ya Wokovu, to reggae jams like Una Nini and Sikujua.

This debut recording aptly tells Mose’s life story. Take Sikujua for instance - not only is it his favorite song but also a testimony of God’s rescue at a time when he was riddled with an unknown infirmity. He remembers how he was constantly falling sick in 2000 yet the doctors could not diagnose his ailment. After numerous visits to health centers, herbalists and ‘spiritual healers’, God mysteriously healed him in an unexpected rain shower!

Born in 1982 in Narok, Mose spent his early life in the town and later Kilgoris, then Lodwar before the family finally settled in Kisii town. Philip and his siblings, three brothers and two sisters, were brought up in a stringent Christian environment, with church a mandatory requirement and prayers a daily norm. At the age of fifteen, Philip made a personal decision to follow Christ, and immediately got into music ministry.

Joining the Cardinal Otunga High School in Mosocho, he started writing music. During his school holidays, Philip would learn how to play the keyboard by the help of his elder brother who is a keyboardist. By the time he was completing his secondary education, Philip’s musical gift had blossomed and he could comfortably write and play songs.

In 2003, Philip moved to Nairobi when he joined University of Nairobi to pursue a degree in anthropology. This move enabled him to join Mamlaka Hill Chapel and he was integrated in S.A.L.T. (Saving A Living Transformer) Fellowship as part of the worship team as a singer and instrumentalist. This development gave him an opportunity to sharpen his musical skills.

His first attempt to record his music was in 2004 – it didn’t work. Rather than discourage him, this served to give him even more impetus. He pushed on and eventually got through to Gideon Kamanzi, who agreed to do his debut album. Mose’s compelling voice demands a listen – but there’s more than just his music career that occupies his time.

In conjunction with Bibilia Husema Broadcasting, he’s planning various promotional ventures that will see him assist fellow Gospel artists to market their music. His other passion is missions. He is currently working with several missionaries in Northern Kenya to bring hope to the hopeless.

The journey has just began for Philip and he knows that there many challenges awaiting him on the way but both as a Christian and as a Gospel singer. But Philip is adamant and he continues to push on bravely.

I think that he is a very talented artist and he has a very good personality as well. I like his album, 'Dunia', especially, the track no. 1. Dunia and the track no. 4. Saa ya wokovu, of course, although the other songs are also excellent !!!
