MOG were the biggest winners at this year’s Chaguo La Teeniez (CHAT) Awards, bagging all the three categories they had been nominated for. At the gala event held at the Carnivore on 14th June, MOG were announced winners for Teeniez Gospel Group ahead of 501, Wernono Crew and Maximum Melodies, while their song Zing Zing picked up the award for Teeniez Gospel Song. The latter warded off strong competition from Fundi Wa Mbao and Wernono Anthem.

But arguably MOG’s biggest win was in the Teeniez Hottest Dance Video category, where they trounced secular big-wigs Nameless, Mejja and Mad Traxx to emerge victorious. MOG became the first Gospel act to ever win a secular category at the awards, as well as sharing with Jua Cali the honor of being the first ever triple CHAT winners. Speaking to Mwafrika.com, MOG’s Tony expressed thanksgiving at this honor, saying:

“We were very surprised especially for the secular category. What these awards say to us is that we're growing, and we have many people who are appreciating our work. It means a lot, and then coming just a few weeks after we won the Groove Award, its a great thing. And to think we just came out of nowhere, you know? We're very honoured.”

The only other winning Gospel act was S.K. Blue, who walked away with the Teeniez overall Gospel artist award. Blue had been nominated alongside Kisima winner Astar and Groove Award winners Mercy Masika and Juliani.

Other winners of the day included Prime Minister Raila Odinga who beat the Red Cross and Nobel laureate Proffesor Wangari Maathai to pick up the Teeniez Role Model award and KTN newbie Esther Arunga who won the TV Queen award. Tahidi High’s Omosh (Stephen Kinuthia) won the TV King category. Long-time media personality Jimmi Gathu, now the host of Citizen TV’s Power Breakfast, got the Lifetime Achievement Award.
