Big Brother Who? - Mumo Mutisya | Print |  E-mail

Image [Author’s Warning: The following piece of literature may contain scenes of violence or language that suggests violence…but ilibidi.] Well, it was one of those afternoons that I was grateful to God for whoever invented the frying pan, fire and definitely French fries. I was at home, quietly enjoying my week off after negotiating a tough deal that had added a couple of zeros to our firm’s profits. I was feeling quite proud of myself, and every now and then, I would pause in front of the mirror to recite my acceptance speech for the employee of the year awards – I was in the zone.
Right in the middle of one of those recitals, my kid bro walked in from school. Apart from the loud doors slamming behind him as he stormed into his room, the fact that he didn’t utter a word during dinner told me something wasn’t okay. As any caring brother would do, I went to have a word with him after dinner.

First, let me tell you a bit about Jason. For a class three kid, he’s got a big brain, a sassy mouth and an attitude to go with all that. He’s the classic example of a spoilt, pampered lastborn who thinks the world must revolve around him. Being the first born, my parents don’t bother much. I have exclusive rights to turning this little minx into a fine lad. That includes paying his fees, shopping and of course once in a while canning his little bottom when he gets too naughty… but you get my drift - he’s my responsibility.

So where was I? After dinner I went into his room to have a word with him. My first assumption was that the little dude had got himself into some girl trouble…before you say anything like too young, I am a guy and take this from us, chicks are a rather tricky topic from the moment a small baby boy opens his little eyes and sees the world-and I think from there it only gets more complicated.

That aside, turns out that it was the proverbial bully problem. You all know how it is-bigger boy picks on smaller boy, punches are thrown here and there and smaller boy looses fight, his lunch money and above all his ego and pride. A man is not…let me rephrase that…A man has absolutely, positively, completely no reason to live once his ego and pride hit zero. It’s like taking away the flight of an eagle and expect it to live.

So there I was, stuck with a little man that was beginning to understand what it means to be a man and wasn’t liking it at all. Now judge me if you wish but I thought I was doing what was best for my kid bro. The first thing I told him is when you get hit, hit back harder and if the worst comes to the worst, fight dirty, fight scrappy, use anything you can get your hands on and hit anywhere…and I mean anywhere.

Since my leave was ending soon, I decided it would be best to give him a little kick start on this noble but rather bloody road to being a man. Next day after school, I waited for him outside the gate and after identifying the little bully, I told him to stand aside. I walked to the little bully (Bruce was his name) and whispered some words into his ears.

I can’t disclose everything I told him, but it was along the lines of I work in the military and I will poke his eyes out and feed him to my twenty dogs if he ever touches Jason again. Well, for a class two kid that was a bit too traumatizing actually, the little scraper peed on himself (ouch!) but hey, for my spoilt little bro, I’d go to the moon. Next day, Jason came home as jolly as ever. In fact, he got his lunch money back plus bonus. The only flaw is that to date, he gets sent home at least once every term for fighting but we are working on that.

Here’s the point - The Bible refers to us as children of God (John 1:12) and again refers to Jesus as our firstborn (Col 1:15). Humanity, so frail and defeated, was under the threshold of sin and death. But Jesus came and took our place, paid our penalty, fought and won our battle against the devil, sin and death (Isaiah 53). All we need to remember is that just as I came in to fight my kid bro’s battle, Jesus came and did the same for us. So the next time you get bullied by sickness, stress or the devil himself for that matter, just tell ‘em to pick on someone their own size and call on Jesus…He’s our Big Brother.
