Local Gospel music has served up a bumper crop of goodies over the past two years or so. The number of albums released, and great quality albums at that, has not only caught our attention here at Mwafrika.com, but has also seen Gospel featured often in the local mainstream media, both electronic and print.

Maximum Melodies, Zaidi ya Mziki and the Mavuno Worship Project all went on successful overseas tours, Webi and Bariki made us proud when they picked up continental nods, SK Blue flipped the script on us and went afro, and super talent Juliani was snapped up by a UK record label.

Groups have also represented well. VUC were awarded a Kisima, while boy groups FATMOD and Shtuko continued to characterize Gospel music’s excellence.

But in all honesty, the past two years have seen the ladies step up and make us proud. Think Mercy Masika, Kambua, Mercy Wairegi, Eunice Njeri, and the late Angela Chibalonza, as well as Kiki, Marion Shako, Krystn Ndela, and many more. After a little lull from the ladies, it’s great to see them stand up and get counted.

The men haven’t done too shabbily either. Jimmie Gait killed us with Muhadhara, 501 astonishingly released a double disc album, and it was good to see Mr. Googz drop a Gospel record, launching at the same event as Daddy Owen’s Son of Man. Hip Hop’s cause was well served by the likes of Rigga’s crisp The Awakening and Mass G’s Nipe Wewe.

Wondering what’s with all the names? Well, Mwafrika.com continues to be both honoured and humbled to serve the interests of Gospel music and its fans in this country at this great time.

It is with this in mind that we celebrate Gospel with our Name Droppin’ mega giveaway. Our readers can now celebrate with us by winning themselves an album of any one of the artists whose names appear in this piece. From Astar to Zina, vets like Pete Odera and Kanjii, to debutants Kevo Yout and Caro Nice, if your favourite artist has an album, it’ll most likely to be on offer. For good measure we’ll even throw in a few more local albums, as well as a few overseas titles from our friends over at Twelve Entertainment – think Christafari, Mission Epistle, Marvin Winans Jr. and others.

Amazing how far Kenyan music has come.Just like alyrics from the album Zaidi ya Mziki-`...toka siku za..sina madeni....`the Kenyan music has come this far.Iremember being soo exited when ibought their1st album (Sina Madeni) and the difference with the latest Zaidi ya Muziki, there`s soo much growth in their lyrics, vocals and production. Our artists have put God first and everything has fell into place. From Kora Awards to Intn.Ipersonally can identify with the song `Mwadhara` by Jimmy Gait and thats Ministry! Isence amove from the comfort zone from SK Blue in `Kitenge`.Ilove the change of style

8"Gospel Music rocks"
at Saturday, 17 January 2009 11:37by Mickey Michael
Mi ma self am proud of our own being able to make it to the top & even go beyond the boundaries like Webi. I can now listen to diverse kind of gospel not as b4 when gospel was regarded as worship. If we can even win even in da secular World then secular artists should totally sell out 2 Christ.
