Ready To Chit Chat? | Print |  E-mail
Brace yourself. One of local Gospel music's most loved ensembles recently underwent a revolution of epic proportions. Name change. Sound change. Attitude change. Personnel change. All this and much more going down with the group formerly known as Hip-Hope.

Image

You might have known and loved them as Hip-Hope - an ensemble of solo acts Astar, Rigga, Juliani and Michelle, as well as rapper Bupe and singers Dee and Ciiru (with Groove award winner Blackman serving as producer/band leader). Between them they have won awards, released acclaimed albums, dominated airplay with their radio singles and music videos, and in the process stolen the hearts of hip-hop lovers countrywide. Now a larger platform beckons, and inevitably change came. Enter Chit Chat.

Invariably, questions would be asked. What's with the change? Why drop the name of a strong brand? Why Chit Chat? What's on the horizon for them now? Well, Chit Chat leader Astar caught up with us to discuss these and other concerns.

Critically, this is not a change. According to Astar, the move from Hip-Hope to Chit Chat was a natural process of growth and maturation. For one, and as is natural with groups, a number of members moved on to pursue other ventures. Blackman left the Kijiji fold to set up production house Blackman Entertainment, while Juliani's foray with UK-based Gatwitch Records sent him in a different direction for this season.

Secondly, the artists felt that if they were to position themselves for a larger platform, and transform into a national phenomenon, they would need to restrategise. Their purist hip-hop sound, though pleasing, was not going to afford them what they called "national artist status" - that explains their sporting a much more poppy sound -  a fusion of Pop, R&B, Hip-Hop and Soul - as evidenced on their Gitxx-driven jump-off debut single "Buzzin". "I Like It", their unreleased follow-up single, is set to continue in similar vein. Their hope is that this fresh new sound would be an avenue not primarily to propel them into the music stratosphere, but more so to help them become an agent of change. 'Transformation' is a big word with the group, and they're realising their mandate is not just to make banging beats, but to begin to positively impact their generation. By smoothing out their sound, they feel they are able to reach a wider demographic than just the hip-hop loving fan.

And if that's not radical enough, check out Astar's proclamation - one that may not only court controversy, but, to some, may even sound near heretical. "A Gospel song does not neccessarily have to have the word Jesus in it". The group's contention is that many people are bound by religion, and are yet to experience the freedom of relationship with a loving God. By coming at them with everyday chit chat (pun intended), and subtly introducing them to a lifestyle of loving God, defenses begin to get broken and the message of the Gospel becomes more palatable."

Astar says, "We call ourselves Chit Chat because we want our music to spark conversation. We'll talk about everyday things that happen to everyday people. And as people continue to engage with us, and realise that our values and message are driven by the Gospel, we hope to spark change".

Image

Their approach is novel. And bold. Chit Chat are set to blaze a trail some may have considered but never ventured. And to affirm their seriousness to their new approach and direction, each group member has ceded their personal ambitions to see this work. All their individual careers are curretntly on pause, as they work together to establish Chit Chat. that means that upcoming albums from Michelle, and the crazy wicked Astar-Brian King (Votaries) collabo album, will all have to be on hold. To put this in perspective, Rigga no longer exists as a single entity. Neither does Michelle, Astar or Bupe. Whereas Hip Hope was a coalition of individual artists, Chit Chat is a single entity of established artists.

So what's next for Chit Chat? Well, don't look out for an album. Astar says "There is no thought of a full-length record on the horizon. At least not yet. Our focus right now is on releasing singles and using them and their music videos to impact the youth through media and the arts".

Chit Chat are also in the middle of their schools tour in conjunction with K-Krew, and are looking at reaching out to one hundred schools throughout the country. In addition, later in August they anticipate the first edition of School's Out, the event that replaces their much-loved Hip-Hope event.

No doubt their fans will be keeping their eyes open, ears peeled and mouths ready to chit chat some more.

Aiii...i'm not sure i agree with what Astar said. Ati Gospel songs should not have the name Jesus in them. I don't feel that. there's no point of watering down the Gospel just so that you can supposedly reach more people. I love Hip-Hop and all, lakini they need to rethink that strategy.

I totally dont agree with what astar has posted. That name has power, significance and is still relevant to those who want to pursue or hit natinal figures .The name Jesus is so sacred that only those who understand what he had to go through so that we could be grafted into the original vine .Its because of that name why we are saved so you must mention that name if you are an agent of God.This goes to Riggah ,in your song \\\'wanna change the world\\\' yo say that ,Jesus didnt blend in,Jesus changed the world,so are we blending with the world? we started with the spirit lets not finish

I loved Hip-hope’s performance (especially Michelle) during last year’s TSO. Very talented chaps but you need to define your chore objectives. A gospel without Christ? The westerner’s did not wake up one day and decided to allow gay marriages in church – so people will fit in. This is how it starts, give the devil an inch and he will take a mile. On the name change, don’t have an opinion as of now but lets see how it unfolds.

I used to love hip-hope...on chit chat and buzzin in particular...I do give a thumbs down...chances are, if some one never knew hip-hope they wouldnt even know what this song was about...chances are they wouldnt that this was another form of representin Christ..I have no biff wit the glamour but eish...I found buzzin a bit too shallow...I am disappointed..but I am still looking forward to their next single to see whether I can figure out what they are about(because I have known all their songs from the start)

funny how a group that used to profess Christ so openly can now talk about him so differently. its hard to believe that the same guy who sung about the name of Jesus would go back and say that a song doesnt necessarily have to have Jesus... but i thought that we agreed that in the name of Jesus great miracles happened and people were led to Christ and changed...why not just cut the chase and use the name of Jesus after all it has power ...just a thought though....

awesome, im glad there are peeps who stand for GOD. I ws bothered by the video then the comment cemented it confirmed my fears. Artists, remember JESUS does nt nid lawyers, he can profess his gospel without us watering it down to the world. b the ambassadors God called you out to be. I saw the video on the beat among other gospel songs like kapungala n ceiling, bt who would tell it was gospel. at that point then, the reason ASTAR n team wanted to send is lost. This is not to say the product is not quality, bt what about the message?

Hi ya'll out there, I think it's easy to miss the point here. As Gamaliel said 'if this is not of the Lord it will not stand'. It's much easier to criticize and analyze others than to share what we're doing that is more effective in bringing people to the kingdom. Chit-chat, bravo for stepping out like Paul in the bible; I don't expect many in the home-crowd to understand. But keep your eyes on the prize and stay focused on JC. Peace

You guys are doing a good job keeping the gospel of Jesus alive. For me it does not matter what methods we use to pass the message as long as at the end of the day we remain true to who we are and who we represent. HIP HOP has been criticized for ages in the history of music and even today it still will be a problem in the Kenyan religious community. Its entry into the gospel realm will be met by a lot of stereotypical prejudice will are all aware of, but one thing I have to remind us is that the genre of music is not the beef here. remember Lingala then and now we are headed there. PEACE

The commercialisation of local gospel music really blurs their intended message and eventually those who follow the movement do it for all the wrong reasons. To be part of an inverted coolness. Just a thought there...
