Former SWV vocalist and R&B crooner Coko Clemons makes a return this July with her second album as a Gospel artist, The Winner in Me. Landing in stores on July 14, the seasoned veteran’s junior solo album is full of uplifting music and her signature vocals, and seeks to solidify her place on the shelves of Gospel lovers.
The album’s lead single, Wait, is a decidedly churchy anthem about waiting on God’s faithfulness. Its sweeping emotion has earned it many fans already, and is pushing the rest of the album as well. Showing her versatility, Coko transitions smoothly to tracks like Rescue Me and The Winner in Me, both soulful ballads betraying her R&B roots, as does Oh Mary on which she features Kelly Price.
Israel Houghton weighs in heavily on the upbeat The Joy of the Lord, while a hip-hop-soul collaboration with Canton Jones on Made a Way makes for a sensational listen. The album is noticeably hemmed by James “Big Jim” Wright (Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Elton John). Speaking about the project, Coko says: “The Winner in Me,” I think it’s really a good CD if you’re going through it and just feeling down and out. I say it’s for depressed and insecure people. It’s something that can just uplift you, encourage you and make you feel better. To encourage you and let you know, there is a winner inside of you. A lot of people are going through a lot in this day and time. I just wanted to put some music out there that’s real positive!"
This album does more than just that – it brings together urban inspirational jams, contemporary pop tracks and worship ballads to showcase Coko’s exceptional ability and coming longevity as a Gospel act.
