Quiet, unassuming and somewhat shy, he is easy to pass by in a crowd full of loud turn-tablists. That is, if you somehow didn’t know that he’s one of Gospel’s fastest rising DJs – because that’s exactly what Groove Award nominee DJ Sanch is.
In less than a year, DJ Sanch has come from a guest spinner on Kubamba (then on Hope FM) to Station DJ at K-Krew’s Power Radio, co-producer and co-host of its flagship youth show, Club Kubamba and co-host of the Breakfast Show on Fridays alongside Gowi Odera. Never mind that not so long ago, he thought he was cut out to be a designer!
Real names Marvin Wambua, Sanch first picked up the love for DJ-ing while in high school at Aquinas. He recalls listening faithfully to DJ Kev and Moz back then, never missing a show or any of their gigs. As fate would have it, a friend of his presented him with deejaying software just a couple of years after this, and that marked the start of his days on the turn-tables. ”One of the things I’d do is record every one of those mixes Kev or Moz would play on radio. After I got the software, I decided to try it out by replicating the mixes I heard from these guys”, says Sanch. “I even made sure I got the very same songs so I could try mixing like they did!”
With his rendition of the mixes getting positive response from his pals, Sanch figured it was something he could actually do. Connecting with DJ Krowbar who was then one of the DJs at his church, Sanch got an opportunity to get his hands on real equipment. It was also through his involvement with the sound crew at church that his mentor Kevin Gathii connected him with K-Krew’s DJ Moz. In August of 2008, four years after he started DJ-ing, DJ Sanch got his first call up to join K-Krew on Kubamba as a guest jockey. Though he enjoyed the experience, Sanch is quick to point out that this debut was a scary one. He recalls:
“I enjoyed myself, but it was quite scary – wondering what people would say if I mixed in a certain way…but the response was good!
His ‘visiting minister’ status did not last long though, and he soon became a part of the Kubamba family of spinners, joining DJs Moz, Soxxy and Johnny Celeb. Sanch points out that his decision to join K-Krew was informed by a number of factors, including realizing that this was his calling.
“I may have gone to college, studied design and finished, but I realized God had called me to be a DJ – not just to entertain, but to minister. I think I realized this even more when I joined K-Krew. DJ-ing is more than just playing music.”
When Power Radio came into being, Sanch was in the right place at the right time, and being the most available of the K-Krew DJs, got his opportunity to take up the role of the station’s first resident DJ. Club Kubamba took off with a big bang, and his work alongside DJ Johnny Celeb on the show was probably instrumental in his 2009 Groove Award nomination for DJ of the Year (The show went ahead to win Radio Show of the Year). Sanch says, of the nomination:
“It was a big surprise and a big honor, being nominated alongside guys like Moz, Soxxy and Mfalme Krowbar. And to think my nomination came some four years after I started out…that was something. I was so happy that Soxxy won it; he’s like my brother, so I felt the win was mine as well. I’ve seen him work so hard…he deserved it! Next year, I hope to win it!” Hanging Out With SoxxySo what has it been like swimming among the big fish of Gospel radio? Sanch says the experience is worth every moment! ”I’m still learning to talk – everyone around me is really good with talking, and all I want to do is play music! But it’s been really great. I’m learning a lot, and it’s an everyday experience. It’s something I can wake up and do every day without pressure. For me, DJ-ing is it!” he says.
As for the name, it has no spiritual significance – just a nickname from an older brother that stuck with him. That’s DJ Sanch, and you’ll be hearing a lot of him in the years to come!
