Superwoman Linda Arrives | Print |  E-mail

Some may know her as the charming, polished and always smiling young lady that is part of K-Krew. Yet because she’s almost always behind the scenes, few may even know her by name. Not so anymore. Linda Ogallo has hit the Gospel music circuit, and she’s going all out! Riding aloft on the release of her debut single Superwoman, the North Carolina Central University masters graduate is insisting she is here to make a lasting impact.

We caught up with her for this first interview, and here’s what she had to say for herself:

M: Tell us a bit about yourself - your family, where you went to school and all that.
Linda:
Linda Ogallo are my full names, I don’t have a stage name. I just go by the name Linda because that’s who I am. I’m the third born in a family of five children. I went to Milimani for primary school, and then Ngara Girls for high school. After that I was at Augustana College for pre-university, North Carolina Central University for my bachelors in Chemistry and then North Carolina State for my masters in Chemistry.

M: Wow. So how did you even get into music?
L:
I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. My first performances were for my parents’ friends in our living room, all recorded, very embarrassing. In high school I sang in a group called 4Real, started writing my own stuff and performed some of them during CU, the usual drill. I’ve been singing in worship teams and choirs since I’ve been out of high school in 99.

M: Tell us a bit about that and any exceptional experiences you’ve come across
L:
I once sang back up for Ron Kenolly at my church, that was an honor. I toured North Carolina with the worship and praise mass Choir for a year, even shared a stage with Deitric Haddon and Men of Standard. I remember Deitric giving us some encouragement back stage and thinking he’s just another young zealous black man till later when I connected the music to him. If I had known it was him I probably would have paid more attention to what he said.

M: Interesting. It sounds like you always knew you were going to be an artist…
L:
I always thought I was destined to sing in worship teams – that’s where I was happy, leading worship, but every time I’d try to write worship songs I’d draw a blank. The last thing I thought I would be is a musician. But God set me up, gave me a reason, a message and the opportunity. Last year (2008) December I was featured in a collabo with some of hip hop’s finest on the song Stonger by Ngashville (the jam featured Linda, Chit Chat’s Michelle and Astar, Advocate, Holydave, LC and Shem). After that I recorded my first song Superwoman.

M: Is there a story behind the track?
L:
Superwoman is based on Phil 4:13 which says “I can do all things through Christ” and it features LC. It was done by Bruno at Lodwa Records. I wrote the song to encourage myself - I’m an expert in synthesis and throw me anything in that area, and I’ll figure it out. I have the confidence, but when it came to the music industry, it was unknown territory for me, and Superwoman was my way of telling myself that God has given me strength to deal with whatever come my way.

M: Let’s backtrack a little. You've been part of K-Krew for a while - what's the story?
L:
I’ve known (K-Krew front-men) Moz and Njugush for about ten years now. When I moved back to Kenya after school Moz knew my vision and he asked me to help out with K-Krew while I figured things out. I guess you can call it divine appointment - when God places some people in your life, you never know how big a part they will play helping you fulfill your purpose. Moz has been key in that, keeps reminding me my vision time and time again, keeps pushing me to get into it.

M: So why have you decided that now is the time for you to get into music?
L:
When I moved back home the one thing I was sure about was that God wanted me in Kenya and that I had a message for young women. As much as I was coming back home I felt like Abraham walking towards the promised land not knowing where he was going or how to get there. I started a few projects with a lot of zeal and not enough wisdom, one of them was a scholarship program and the other was a peer counseling program that ran in Moi Girls and St Georges. Both programs are being evaluated and will be re-launched after working on the holes that were not originally foreseen. Music is one way to reach more young women than I could reach doing only motivational speaking; my music can go to places I’ll probably never go.

M: What’s next for you then? Video? Album?
L:
I’m half way through my album and that has all been God I can’t take any credit for it. I’m working on videos for two songs I did with Dr Eddy, they should be out soon.

M: One last thing – tell us a bit about your walk…
L:
I don’t remember the exact day and time I got born again like most people know, I was in class four and my aunt had told me I’d burn in hell if I didn’t get saved so I did, then I scared all my friends into salvation then after that we dint know what to do next! I gave my life to Christ again when I was 15 with a clearer understanding of the decision I was making. It’s not always been easy since then, I’ve made my share of mistakes but I know without Christ I honestly rather be dead. I worship at Nairobi Chapel.

M: Thanks Linda, and all the best!
