Former Three 6 Mafia don-turned-holy-hiphoper Mr. Del is back this July with his latest project, Thrilla. Twenty new blazing jams make up the track-list for Mr. Del’s junior album, also his first release on Universal Records.
With this anthology, Mr. Del makes no apologies for his style – how you receive it depends almost entirely on whether his original untainted Southern crunk is your bowl of chips or not. From the hit single Spreading the Gospel, which features Mali Music, to the interestingly titled Checkin' my Swag, the record is loud, straight-hitting and impressive. And crunk.
Elsewhere, rap-meets-rock on Crunk As Me as Mr. Del engages IROCC in a head-banging smash-up that should pump the sound up a little higher. The message and music continues on the uplifting Walk of Faith and U Can Do It Too. There’s something about fusing in the gospel feel of church choirs and the electronic overtones of crunk that gives quite an enjoyable result.
To his credit, Mr. Del pushes in a couple of smooth jams that should get more than just crunk lovers listening to his record. The melodic Life Rated ‘R’ (for Real) and Indescribable are not only outstanding but also do a good job of showing Mr. Del’s versatility.
Says Mr. Del of this release: “(What’s different about this album is that first), this is the first project on my Universal label deal so that’s very exciting. Secondly, sonically, this album is my best album up to date - it has a variety in music style. Thirdly, it’s more of a transparent album lyrically.”
No matter what else it is, Thrilla continues to press the point that Mr. Del is one of Gospel hip-hop’s chief ambassadors. Oh, and just in case the title may sound just a little like another multi-platinum release by the recently departed MJ, Mr. Del explains that this Thrilla is actually an acronym for ‘The Real Anointing’.
