July 12th, Pneuma Church - It is true that there is no price too high to pay for a good thing – many artists braved the July morning chill to turn up at this month’s artist breakfast at the Pneuma Church. Promptly at 8:30am, guests begun to arrive at the venue all geared to kick off. As is usual, the day’s topic “Branding for Christian artists” was first broken down in discussion groups before being subjected to the plenary. Some of the pertinent questions being posed were, What is branding? What are the effects, consequences and impact of branding both to the artist and the listener/fan? There was also the question of whether those who minister on the platform of church services in their different capacities e.g. choirs should consider branding.
Host and MC, Mwafrika.com Features writer John Kigada steered the discussion, first engaging Hope FM’s Andrew Alovi who spent ten minutes laying the basics of branding, and urging creativity and focus. Other panellists included Holy Dave, one of the artists behind the increasingly popular Mad Love Lounge, as well as MOG’s Tony and producer Steve Ominde.
Predictably, the discussion was marked by various digressions over sticky and controversial issues (some of which gave birth to next month’s topic: what determines whether music is secular or Christian? – you don’t want to miss that!). All that aside, the artists agreed that Gospel artists must of necessity seek divine direction when it comes to branding, as their image represents the Gospel they carry.
Of course breakfast was in plenty, kindly provided by Pneuma Church, and as the curtains fell on another edition of Artists Breakfast, it was obvious that the forum had done what it does best – provide a platform for artists to learn, share opinion and express themselves. An altogether wholesome experience! MC John Kigada Starts
