August 1, City Hall - This was the August ‘opener’ gig, the first of a multitude of Saturday afternoons that this month will see. It was also the opener for the self proclaimed ‘king of swagger’, otherwise known as Ng’ashville – launching his debut CD was not going to be a wishy-washy affair. It wasn’t. Far from it. The sound was loud, the stage star-studded and the crowd with it as Ng’ashville formally announced his arrival on the Gospel music scene.
From the moment he got on stage with LC on the decidedly urban Choices, to his electric throwback with FATMOD on Songa Kando, Ng’ash was in his element. Easy, poised, looking relaxed in smart casual wear, Ng’ash took time to interact with his fans, explaining how every song came about. It seemed like every jam had been taken to heart by his fans, many of them almost out-singing him.
Kaza Mwendo, featuring pals Daddy Owen and Dunco was an absolute favorite with the crowd at City Hall, while Bamdogo featured on another, Fanana Naye. Speaking of supporting cast, the list of stars that turned up to support Ng’ash was simply impressive. The ‘king of kapungala’ Daddy Owen brought the house down with selections from System ya Kapungala, accompanied by Dunco and a serious dance troupe. Later, Willy joined in on the madly popular Hafungi Macho to wrap up a fantastic session.
Other names on the mic inclsuded the Wernono Family with a pretty happy set (just a reminder that the Wernono Mixtape launches 15th August, they said), multi-award winners MOG, as well as Squadi Sauti. New act Linda of the Superwoman fame gave a good account of herself on her maiden gig appearance, while DJs Touch and Johny Celeb kept the music going. Juliani, ever the expert at getting revelers into a frenzy was present to do just that, aiding MCs Kinijo and Mr.V.
The afternoon had its touching moments – like when the Good Samaritan Children's Home (who were benefitting from the concert’s proceeds) appeared on stage to give their thanks, and when Ng’ash made a dedication to his mum and got all chocked up. Obviously, this was a very personal afternoon for him. It may not have been overly spectacular, but Ng’ash scored many highs on this his debut solo gig, not least of which was the smile on the children’s faces. As he observed, this is just the beginning.
