August 15, Mavuno Dome - One venue, two album launches, ten artists and loads of fun – that’s what was on offer as fans streamed to the Mavuno Dome for what had been billed the biggest launch of the season. And that was no exaggeration - Wernono Family and Dunco spared no expense as they released their debut albums, 10 Ideas and Atalaku respectively.
Backed by a live band, Adonage, the launch saw the combined efforts of Dunco and his Wernono family serve up at least twenty songs off their new albums. While some jams were as fresh as dew, others were familiar tunes that were easy sing-alongs. Each member belted out a tune penned by either just thermselves, or with the collaborative effort of his comrades.
From Shock Absorber, Trinity to Kubackslide Siwezi, Dunco was like a man possessed, never seeming to tire. The true king of collabo, he was on almost every other jam, keeping up that incredible energy all through! The Wernono performance was laden with different genres of music including Kapungala, Lingala, Reggae, Hip Hop and Worship. The family gave their legion of fans a variety of jams, starting off with the familiar tunes of Wernono Anthem and Kaza Mwendo then bringing in the new-school - Amen, Obedience and Hapa Tu among others. The jams gave stories, encouragement and personal testimonies of their lives, hence the "10 ideas".
The day’s MC Richard Kagoe did a splendid job of ensuring the event was lively, tagging with Spinrej DJs to keep revelers on their feet during breaks. Other artists that graced the stage included Kevo Yout, Squadi Sauti, Willie and Linda as well as EMCs, BMF, Holy Dave, Daddy Owen and EkoDyda, with the latter two almost stealing the thunder from the hosts with their captivating performances.
At the end of the afternoon, it was obvious just how much both Dunco and the Wernono Family had put into their music in the past few years. Their energetic performances were top-notch, their music wildly appreciated and their styles as eclectic as anything you’ve seen. That’s probably what you get with a bunch of committed, hard-working and exceptionally talented young men who’ve discovered a family they can function in. Hats off to Wernono!
