Short of gangsters breaking in and relieving the crowd of its possessions, everything that could go wrong at the 8th Annual Kisima Awards did. In a word, it was shambolic. Not only were many nominated artists even unaware of the awards, the few that were, did not bother to turn up. A novice and highly unprofessional MC, Sheila Kwamboka, did the event no favors - her incessant apologies drove the crowd near crazy, and her decision to abandon the event before close of business just served to reduce her stock. Technical difficulties and helter-skelter performances were the order of the day. The Kisima brand may have suffered near irreparable damage.
Chizi With One Of His Two Awards Still, let's leave the chaos of the actual event behind and consider appreciating the artists who have so distinduished themselves in a healthy and growing local music industry. Of special interest is the continued emergence of Gospel acts picking up awards in general categories (Of the 8 multiple award winners, only 3 had no Gospel affiliations). Marion Shako was arguably the biggest of them, not just picking up the Gospel Female Award, but beating the likes of Lady Jaydee and Nyota Ndogo to pick up the regional Female Artist of the Year (East Africa) Award. Worth noting is that Gospel affiliates swept the Urban Fusion awards. Chizi eclipsed names such as Eric Wainaina and Kanjii to receive two well deserved awards Songwriter of the Year and Urban Fusion Male Artist, whilst Kambua (Urban Fusion Female), Mbuvi (Ethinic Fusion Artist) and former Votaries’ members Pentamony (Urban Fusion Group) completed the sweep.
Gospel winners also picking up nods in non-Gospel categories included Wakenya Pamoja (Ensemble, Social Responsibility), as well as MOG (Ragga Artist – as well as Gospel Group).
Other big winners included former winners P-Unit, who returned to pick up an event-high three awards, Boomba Group, Group of the Year (East Africa) and a Best Collaboration Effort Award together with another former winner in DNA. Husband-wife duo of Nameless and Wahu kept the pressure on the industry, each collecting two huge awards – the former winning Male Artist (East Africa) and Video Of The Year (Kenya), and his missus cleaned up with Song of the Year (Kenya) and Reggae Artist, both for her Sweet Love hit.
