Mavuno Still Spreading The Love | Print |  E-mail
Talk about spreading the love - Mavuno Church just don’t stop. After the inaugural Mavuno Spread the Love Festival (See event recap HERE), a music extravaganza that brought together not just many of East Africa’s top Gospel artists, but also Gospel music’s most respected name, Kirk Franklin, Mavuno Church promised to direct event proceeds towards a social justice venture. And on Sunday 18th of October 2009, they came good. In a big way!

Pastor Muriithi Hands Over The Beds

Led by their senior pastor Muriithi Wanjau and a contingent of their pastoral staff and lay leaders, together with Kanjii Mbugua and a stack of local artists, the church visited the Industrial Area Remand Prison and delivered over 300 beds and mattresses to the prison inmates – all at a reported cost of over KSH 3.5 million.

And as novel as this sounds, it wasn’t the first such venture from the church. Following the Mavuno Worship Project’s U.S tour in late 2007, the church visited the Nairobi West Prison on a similar mission – delivering beds and mattresses to wardens and inmates alike (See the event recap HERE).

This time around, they were received by a genuinely elated prisons superintendant, as well as the Deputy Provincial Prisons Commandant.

Prior to the brief presentation ceremony, the inmates were treated to a rare musical concert. Eko Didda kicked things off with his clever poetry and interesting flows, after which various members of the Chit Chat crew (notably Rigga and Michelle) excited their audience with smart ragga jams. Rachel were also in the house, and were well received, before Kanjii and his team performed their signature tune “Under the Rock”. A quick dance competition got the prisoners on their feet and extremely animated.

Brief speeches were made by the various prisons officials, as well as Pastors Simon Mbevi and Muriithi Wanjau, after which the official presentation was made.

And as eloquent and rousing as the speakers were, none grabbed the attention of the inmates more than that of latecomers M.O.G. The singers, Tony and Kenti, received wild applause as they entered the venue – proving their enormous popularity throughout the nation. Yet it wasn’t their performances that stole the show, it was their testimonies. They took the occasion to share the story of their lives – how their own involvement in gang life and crime could have easily seen them behind bars. (Read about MOG HERE). Tony even mentioned the name(s) of colleagues he saw in the crowd.

For the first time all afternoon, the inmates’ full and undivided attention was given – they hang on to every single word spoken, praying and hoping that their own lives would be different. Small wonder an impromptu altar call from the singers yielded at least a dozen hands!! No less than a standing ovation and prolonged applause would do for M.O.G once they were done.

Kudos to Mavuno Church for reminding us all of the exhortation of Jesus –

“I was in prison and you did not visit me”

When did we see you in prison?”

I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me”.
