24th October, Memorial Park - No matter how long they’ve been away, when ZIDI the Band calls you to one of their Saturday evening gigs, please make time for it. Their appearances may not be consistent, but every time they take to the stage, ZIDI make it worth your money and time. Such was the case at their latest do, Muziki Kwa Park.
Though the evening was somewhat chilly, ZIDI didn’t waste a moment in warming up the audience with a new jam, Chukua Mamlaka. From there, it was all systems go as the band unleashed a number of jams from their recent debut and some fresh ones as well. From favorite offerings like Mashaka and Mwangaza, to newer (in performance) Pamoja and Coming Back Home, ZIDI absolutely entertained and uplifted.
With every one of the band members taking turns to lead different jams, the display of vocal ability was simply impressive. Not only that, but the ever fluid Macharia ensured that even the most uncoordinated among the audience had a move they could dance to. And dance they did, in appreciation of fine music provided by ZID’s instrumentalists (backed by some Rock of Ages members).
ZIDI roped in spoken word act Number 8 for Nawe, with commendable results. The band’s background vocals provided the perfect backdrop for Number 8’s fluent lyricism, to the delight of the revelers. Also sharing the stage was the Les Wanyika-sounding Kenyatta University’s Terra Cotta, who made a case for their being the next big band with three well delivered songs.
The MC did try, unsuccessfully, to end the gig promptly at 6 before he was drowned out with shouts of Breathe and Mwangaza from the enthused crowd. So the gig ended on a dancing note as ZIDI delivered these two encores, dropping the curtain on what had been a most entertaining two hours.
Maybe it is their long absences that make ZIDI so fresh every time we see them, or maybe they just are. Whatever the case, Muziki Kwa Park left many yearning for more of ZIDI.
