With the number of accolades they’ve managed to acquire, you would be forgiven to think Saints have been around since the renaissance. But that would be far off, for the group’s light only started shining in 2004. From being finalists at SPA Fest 08 to first runners-up at the 09 edition, and later on bagging first runners-up at the Malta Street Dance competition, Saints have continued to stamp their name on the Gospel entertainment scene. In 2009, the group also received a nod from the Groove Awards nominations board, their first.

It's easy to see how their titles are a testament to what determination, discipline and God can do for a group that stays focused.Though they have come from far, theirs is not just about dancing and winning - the group started more as a Bible Fellowship than a dance troupe, based at the Kahawa West DC Church. Now comprising ten core members, three ladies and seven guys, they are quick to point out that Saints is not just the dancers but also a big fellowship of young believers in the church.

Spiritual growth is a key component of the group and this has been a key pillar in developing the members. In fact, apart from the grueling strict practice that is hardwired in their system, Bible Study is tops in their priorities. Being a big family as they are, they also take time out to have fun through teambuilding activities that includes among others games and social events like dinners.

So, what is so saintly about them that they derived their name thus? Jack explains

‘We chose the name because a Saint is a sinner who fell down but still rose up. He is chosen by God for His glory to do a specific particular task on earth so that when we get to heaven we will be termed as a 'good and faithful servant' just like Peter and John’

The journey to the top has not been without challenges. They say there is always a story behind the glory and theirs has not been different. Being accepted by the older folk and gaining their support has been one, thus, requiring them to prove themselves time and again. Struggling to remaining relevant and balancing between business and ministry has been another herculean task, apart from the fact that some of the members are still in school and others working, hence needing delicate time-balancing as well.

While Ignitaz have been one of their greatest challenges as far as decoration is involved, they are their best friends as far as ministry is concerned. They have worked together in a number of projects and they both belong to a ministry group in their area that looks out for the interest of dance groups.

Dance practice sessions are treated with the seriousness they deserve and knowing this, members adhere to a strict code of conduct. Sometimes, injuries come with some intense dance moves and therefore caution is not thrown to the wind. When they don’t have major gigs to perform, they meet twice a week but incase of an upcoming event, may meet daily sometimes even doing overnights.

Saints are not just stopping here. They say, in parting:

“We hope to go international. We are not called just for Kenya but also for the rest of the world. Not to say that we will leave home but as God wills, we shall go”
