Just Who Is Alice Kamande? | Print |  E-mail

Elegant, ambitious and intelligent; that‘s Alice Kamande for you. Add to that musical talent, an engineering degree, banking experience and an eye for design, and you see how full her hands must be. Yet the much talked about songwriter, singer and interior designer considers she’s just began, and is gunning for more.

Alice burst into the scene with her successful debut single, Ni Wewe, a beautiful worship ballad that has caused the industry to sit up and take notice. Yet she didn’t start off as the singer she’s now become – her first port of call was a bank job. Lacking fulfillment, she opted to resign, with no back-up plan in sight.

“It was really hard” she says, “I didn’t know what I was going to do with my life then. Still, there was this unexplainable peace when I resigned, I knew in some sort of way, Gods providence would keep me and that He was with me”

Without looking back, Alice knew it was time to live her life’s purpose; music. After all, she had always known she could sing. While she was just seven years old, she was already imitating popular artistes.  She would go ahead to win a talent competition in Form One, and subsequently lend her vocals on a musical compilation for the school. In Form Three, she started writing her own songs. During this time, she rededicated her life to Christ and was told by the preacher who led her to this commitment that she would be a great singer.

“I can never forget that day” she adds, “It was a really startling thing. I did not expect to be told that for the thought was just scary”

Although she would go to college to study engineering as she had wanted to, it wasn’t too long before she felt the time had come for her to launch her musical career.

Thankfully, Alice did not have to look far when time to record her debit single came. Her brother in law, decorated producer Robert “R-Kay” Kamanzi, who she describes as her mentor, was just a stones throw away. The song and video performed exceptionally well,  and within no time, the hitherto unknown artist was not only on the charts, but a talking point in the Gospel music industry.

The last born in a family of five, Alice describes herself as independent and strong willed. Her upcoming album, which she hopes to release in April 2010 will feature diverse genres, including zouk, afro-fusion, RnB among others. You can also expect a touch of two sounds merging as R-Kay and Sammy Gitonga join forces in production.

Alice has a few wise words for her fellow musicians:

“Romans 12 comprehensively states virtues every Christian should desire to live by…humility, love, and service to God. In a nutshell, I would like to let Gospel musicians know that they should not just casually do it for the sake…they should know that we are representing Someone and our main aim should be making Him known”

Wow, its good to see beaufitul, intelligent, confident, God fearing ladies singing to the glory of the almighty, indeed , seek ye the kingdom of God and all these other things shall be added unto you, I like the way you remind other artists not to take the gospel ministry casually as is the case with some now, but to remember that they are ambassadors of Christ and should therefore endeavour to be Christlike, be blessed as you continue with your Ministry!
