Sammy Muraya, better known in these circles as DJ Mo, calls himself 'mfalme', despite having lost the Mfalme duel to Coast-based secular act DJ Nelly. As far as Mo is concerned, the final night was just a culmination of acclamation he received throughout the knock-out stages on his way to the Mfalme final. That aside, Mo made it onto the 2010 Groove Awards nominations list, and is promising to win that one. We caught up with him for a brief chat, and here's how it went.
Mwafrika.com: Thanks for taking the time to talk to us man. So, the Mfalme contest... DJ Mo: Wow, yeah. It was good, it was an oportunity i got and I netted...my main aim was to minister and to show the world that Gospel is the big thing right now. I enjoyed myself! Mwafrika.com: Did you enter the competition because Krowbar won last year? DJ Mo: Well, that was part of it. I think he opened the way for many of us. But I was also certain that I have what it takes to win the competition in my own right. The competition showed that.
Mwafrika.com: Tell us about the experience. What made you so sure you could do it?
DJ Mo: First of all, God's favor. I must acknowledge that. But I also believed in myself and I have the skills, so I did well. Actually, all the way to the final, I never lost a single one of the competitions. I always won.
Mwafrika.com: So what exactly went down at the finals?
DJ Mo: Well, we had two rounds of competition. I was very prepared for the first round and it showed in my performance. Out of 12, three of us made it to the second round, and I was ready to do my thing. You know, I'd heard that the sponsors had said that no Gospel DJs should win, but I just wanted to do my thing. Unfortunately, I think the round wasn't fair, my fader was lowered just after two minutes instead of the three I was allocated and I wasn't able to finish. Still, I did my best...
Mwafrika.com: You think you were the better DJ of the night?
DJ Mo: To be honest, I had the biggest crowd. In fact, when they announced that Dj Nelly had won, everyone was shocked. There was practically silence, even media guys were shocked. I felt bad, because I honestly think we (Gospel) deserved it. But that's competition man, I'm easy now.
Mwafrika.com: Wow. What comes next for you? DJ Mo: In terms of Mfalme, we haven't talked about my prize yet, I'll know how that goes in the next few weeks. But the experience has given me useful mileage, and a foothold into the bigger DJ-ing world. I hope can use that for good..
Mwafrika.com: Alright, good stuff. One more thing, congratulations on the Groove Nomination.
What's your take? DJ Mo: Yeah, I was very surprised about the nomination. I really thank God for it, coz I'd been praying and hoping, and you know, it came through. I think it's such a big honor for me. Mwafrika.com: Think you can win this one?
DJ Mo: Oh sure! I think the only threat on that list is DJ Krowbar. I'll do my part, I believe I can win this one. Mwafrika.com: All the best. And thanks again for taking the time to talk to us. DJ Mo: Sure man. Anytime!
