Michelle Bonilla straddles the two worlds of urban Gospel and pop with relative ease – at least if her sophomore album is anything to go by. In Spite of Me, Bonilla’s first project in five years, has got the Gospel world abuzz and is already receiving wide praise.
Hemmed by her husband producer Lee Jerkins of Rock Soul, In Spite of Me has just enough of everything – rock, soul, hip-hop, a dash of raga and even a track-full of latino. The album’s lead single, Your Show is a searing jam that fuses techno and hip-hop to create a true success. It also sets the theme for the rest of the noticeably vertical record.
The title track is a smooth R&B offering that finds Bonilla acknowledging the supremacy of God in spite of us and our failings. She continues to relate tales of surrender that anyone can identify with on songs like Give it Up and This is my story, the latter featuring R-Swift.
Bonilla also features CMR’s Lecrae and Flame on Our Generation, an exhortation for world-changers. Chevelle Franklin weighs in on the reggaeton flavored Go Harder, a sure party track that adds verve to the album. Bonilla’s exceptional vocal strength comes across on beautiful worship melodies Eres el Rei and I Am.
In Spite of Me is an attractive offering not only because of its diversity in style and contemporary flavor but also because of the simple message that rings all through it – God is Sovereign.
