Mwafaka Awards Held | Print |  E-mail

August 14, Kenya National Theatre – Nairobi’s Eastlands is home to some of the biggest artists this country has seen. In Gospel circles in particular, many of the crème de la crème trace their roots to the area that covers Huruma, Buruburu, Dandora, Umoja, Kayole, Maringo and Jericho estates – hence the Mwafaka Awards. This year’s edition saw Eastlands honor some of their finest, doing so for the second time in a bigger, better and brighter way.

Although the KNT is hardly the Elysee, the event organizers pulled all the stops to ensure that the awards were still glitzy and glamorous. The artists did not disappoint either, turning up in their best and putting on quite a show. For some, it was the first time they were getting recognized for their efforts, while for others, they had traveled this road before.

The MCs, Tony of MOG and Monique provided an interesting blend. Tony brought humor while Monique exuded elegance.  The hype guy was Alemba, with his ceaseless energy keeping the event going alongside System Unit DJs led by DJs Mo and Sadic. The afternoon’s performances included Ngashville, Am A Son, Hey-Z and Mr. Vee pairing up with Caro Nyce among others.

When it came to the awards, Kris (of the Eh Baba fame) walked away with the male artist trophy while the dance group award was bagged by Alabaster dancers. Mad Love Lounge’s DJ GG was named DJ of the Year, while Izzo's Sunday Chroistian got the nod for hip-hop song.

Save for a few hitches, the event was a good display of what Eastlands has to offer in terms of new talent, and looks set to keep doing that. Here is the list of winners and pictures from the event.
