August 14-15, NAIROBI - Nairobi was treated to a refreshing worship experience like no other as one of the world’s top artists and worship ministers descended on the city. It’s difficult to top Israel Houghton & New Breed in contemporary praise and worship, and they gave their all on this weekend, leading thousands at the VIP show and a subsequent youth show organized by Moja Voyce.
The VIP show at the Nairobi Baptist Church was the first up, with the large sanctuary almost packed for the 3-hour event. The evening started with a special choir, before local acts Neema, Andy Mburu, Jemimah Thiong’o and Kanjii took turns on stage in a creative mishmash of pop and worship that though entertaining, seemed a tad misplaced at times.
Israel and his band were introduced by Acquire The Fire’s Ron Luce, and got on stage to a rapturous welcome, opening his set with Here I Am To Worship and his own For Who You Are. The exceptional vocal and instrumentation skill that this man and his band have were certainly on display as Israel maintained a worshipful mood with a powerful testimony on Power of One and the brand new Hossanna off his upcoming album. Their repertoire also included the uplifting Moving Forward and that all time church favorite, Friend of God which alongside Just Wanna Say had the crowd dancing the hour away. On Sunday, Israel and New Breed moved to Nairobi’s Central Park, this time ministering to thousands of youth from various churches who had gathered at the venue for a special ‘citywide’ service. The energy and vitality that Israel is known for came alive in the city sun, with the crowd singing and dancing along to favorites like Rejoice, With Long Life, Lord You Are Good and Hallelujah.
A holy hush fell over the crowd as attention turned to worship with songs like Alpha and Omega, I Will Search and I Live to Worship. It was an a special moment as young people lifted up one voice in praise and adoration to God, and that was what the whole weekend had been about – ‘moja’ voice. Local acts Eko Dydda, Astar, Rigga and Jaya as well as Juliani wrapped up the show admirably, bringing the curtain down on a very refreshing afternoon and weekend. Choir Kicks Off The VIP Show
