November 12, NPC Valley Road - True to his word, multiple award winner Da' T.R.U.T.H. gave his Kenyan fans a hip-hop throwdown they're unlikely to forget in a hurry. On the first leg of his Big Picture Experience tour, Da' T.R.U.T.H.pulled all the stops in a close to two hour performance in front of about 1,500 adoring and screaming fans out to connect with the celebrated hip-hop minister.
The evening began with DJ mixes from DJ Krowbar and DJ GG, setting the right mood for the party. Somewhat unconvincing performances from local acts followed, and it wasn't until spoken word maestro Number 8 stepped on stage that the action really began. In a performance that had even Da' T.R.U.T.H. mesmerized, Number 8 showed why he's in a league of his own; and so did Eko Dydda, who followed after to a rupturous welcome and went on to lead the vast crowd in singing along to three of his jams, creaming it with Holy Dave on Niko Na Reason. Getting on stage a little after 11pm, all was forgotten as Da' T.R.U.T.H.opened his set with the energy-packed U Ready?, with the shouts almost bringing the roof down. The energy was sky high from the beginning, with Da' T.R.U.T.H.running the whole gamut of his popular jams, backed by the ultra-talented Maurice on the drums. From My President,to Fantasy, You Made, Talk To You and even Kirk Franklin's I Like Me, Da' T.R.U.T.H.had the attention of his mostly young fans as he gave his all.
It wasn't all song either - riding on his wildly received (new) jam I Am Alive, Da' T.R.U.T.H.spent time in between performances speaking to young people and youth leaders, talking of his recent fall and subsequent restoration and urging them to 'stay connected,' and escape the traps of sin. It was wholesome ministry at its best. Other local acts who performed thereafter during the night included Juliani, Bupe and Wernono Crew as well as Xpo, H3 and Izzo with Sunday Christian, while Turning Point presenter and artist Muyiwa was also in the house to acknowledge Kenyan talent. Sadly though, the event was almost wasted by recurring and amateur sound issues (which even served to abruptly stop Da' T.R.U.T.H's performance at some point) - the unprofessionalism in handling that by sound providers was a major low. A number of other organization shortcomings at the gig, including the inclusion of a rather uncouth secular dance group on the programme, nearly ruined what was otherwise a most enjoyable evening.
