He picked up the Outstanding Male Vocalist statuette at the 2010 Talentmania Awards, and little known Michael Kubai could very well be the next force to reckon with on Kenya’s Gospel scene. With big dreams and determination buttressing his vocal abilities, the 23-year old Mic-E is passionate about music, and intends to make it his life-long pursuit.

Mic-E, a student at Strathmore University, confesses:

Music is all I want do. I might be in school studying Leadership, but honestly, music is where my heart is and that is what I will do.

It is this passion that led him to participate in the 2010 Talentmania Awards, where he made it through two tough auditions and the final competition to emerge the outstanding male vocalist. Further to that, he also emerged the competition’s overall winner for the songwriter award. Obviously humbled by these awards, Mic-E says that he learned a lot during the process:

"It helped a lot especially because of the workshops. It made me critical and I saw a lot of things I had not seen before about myself, through the auditions up to the final process. I thank God for it."

More Than Friends is Mic-E’s new single. He says he was inspired to write the love song on realizing that local Gospel artists rarely tackle that subject. However, he points out that this is not an indication that he will be focusing on them, saying he already has another song written, called Sweet Word, this time dedicated to celebrating God’s goodness.

As music styles go, the comparisons with R&B crooner Webi are inevitable; and while Mic-E does acknowledge that Webi is one of his key influences, he also points out that he’s open to trying out new ideas even as he leans towards the mellow. In any case, what is important to him is that he achieves the three goals he has set for his music. He explains:

"I have a desire to tackle three specific areas with my music. First, help the listeners have a deep relationship with God. Secondly, also tackle the issue of relationships from a Godly perspective. This is in the dating arena where people have all sort of thoughts. Thirdly, hope to help give direction to people to live purpose driven lives..."

Beyond these, Mic-E is also looking to achieve more than just musical success. With his passion for young people, he is using social media to reach out to youth, sharing his experiences and thoughts on Facebook and Twitter platforms. He has set up a Facebook page to provide a forum for people to ‘be real with God’ as a way of getting help.

Mic-E notes that his main focus and what keeps him going is his relationship with God:

"I must admit that my relationship with God is the most important thing in my life. I must have a Quiet Time with Him every morning in Word and prayer. This I believe is because if I will be an influence to others, my influence has to come from a positive force."

Look out for this budding star.
