When a poet calls you for a launch gig, you can be sure of three things; rhyme, flow and punch lines; and Number 8, one of Nairobi’s best spoken word and poetry acts, did not disappoint at his Rebuilding album launch – he rhymed, he flowed, he punched lines and to top it all, ministered powerful content.
Dressed in an orange overall and white cap, he looked everything like a mason. The stage was also set with tools of the trade including a wheelbarrow, spade and a background of a yet finished wall playing the back drop.
Backed by a live band, the performances were nothing short of superb. Popular and new pieces littered the afternoon to give an enjoyable experience starting with a brief auto-bio on My story At A Glimpse. It was followed by Mathematical Testimony, a combination of poetry, formulas and music to keep his fans elated, reflecting and bemused. Themes revolving around purity, restoration, relationships and worship were well tackled as he performed among others; Sex in the Temple, Dust Off, Flush It and At the Cross. Guest performances included Pastor Curtis Reed, Julie, Nasara, Baraka and James Mumo, with crowds that included a number of local acts treated to two afternoon shows. Much anticipated, the launch was everything it was billed to be and a sure testament of how much the poet has grown from just being a member of the popular boys group, Mission Driven to being an accomplished, polished and reputable performer.
