K-Krew is a youth ministry that evangelizes the youth of Kenya through Urban Gospel and Biblical Based Convictions (B.B.C.). K-Krew stands for “Kubamba Krew,” Kubamba being slang for attractive or something that grips you. K-Krew is made up of four core members: Gowi Odera, John Njuguna, Ashley Mwikali, and leader Moses K. Mathenge (DJ Moz). Other crucial members include DJ Soxxy, DJ Tommy and DJ Kerry, a pioneering female DJ. They also have an extended “family” whom they call the “K-Krew Family.” It is made up of Christian musicians and DJ's in Kenya who work with Kubamba's different ministries.
BackgroundK-Krew started in May 2000 when DJ Moz started doing a radio show on 103.9 Family FM. As he introduced Urban Gospel Music to the public, its popularity increased steadily. Soon his colleagues joined him on air, and the group became known as “K-Krew”. As they realized the positive impact that music had on young people, K-Krew began looking for more ways that they could maximize that. They were blessed with opportunities to work with three other radio stations in Nairobi : Nation FM 96.4 (Dance Force with DJ Pinye), Metro FM 101.9 (Kubamba) and Hope FM 93.3 (Plug In). Through their work on radio, K-Krew started to expand their ministry and move into the high schools, seeking out their main target audience, as well as organizing concerts featuring the top gospel musicians in Kenya. MINISTRY SUMMARYRadio (Kubamba)Radio is K-Krew's main ministry focus, as it ranks as the most popular form of entertainment in Kenya , giving them the perfect opportunity to reach out to more young people while still remaining in their comfort zones. While on air, K-Krew presenters give a message of hope through Jesus Christ and also address different issues that could be affecting the youth. Some of these could be: respect of authority, teenage pregnancy, abstinence, drug abuse and crime. High School MinistryHigh Schools are K-Krew's main target audience, and as such they visit an average of ten schools per terms, allowing them to interact with at least 4,000 students. There they make visits, hold concertrs and work together with the school administration and the Christian Union to pass their message. K-Krew advocates for A.B.C. (Abstinence, Being Faithful and Christ). Through the abstinence campaign, they give ATM (Abstinence Till Marriage) cards to students who pledge to abstain. These cards act as reminders to the youth of the commitment they made to abstain. Neighborhood Ministry (Hood Ministry)Through their neighborhood ministry, K-Krew is able to reach out to the young people who are idle and may be thinking of getting involved in anti-social behavior. The hood ministry involves going into neighborhoods for street outreach, holding free concerts K-Krew also works with different churches and youth organizations in the respective areas to make each event successful. Chillage At The VillageRealizing that there was great emphasis on teens ministry at the expense of young adults, and the fact that young adults had little or no Godly social alternatives, K-Krew teamed up with Village Market, a local shopping mall, to provide a place where young adults can come, relax, shoot pool, play fuse-ball, bowl and dance to a Christian DJs music. This event that started in January 2004 takes place on the last Friday of each month. Prison MinistryAt least twice a year, K-Krew visits different prisons (including maximum security) all over Kenya . Their prison ministry is similar to the high school ministry, including a concert and a message. It also includes taking things like toiletries and sports equipment for the inmates. K-Krew also came into a partnership with a ministry called “Philemon Trust”, which provides a half-way house for people who have been released from prison. The prison outreach has been part of K-Krew's ministry since 2004. Totally Sold OutThis annual event is a one-day music extravaganza that brings together some of the best gospel talent in Kenya . In the past, the event has had different themes, however during the last two years the emphasis has been on abstinence. K-Krew has tried to hold the event at no cost to the public and have seen hundreds and thousands come. The event has been held once a year since February 2001.
