For a team whose main art is dance, their heart for ministry is fairly apparent. Their vision is clear in their heads, and this drives them to ensure that each member is built up in Godly character, via the various training programs that their church, the interdenominational Nairobi Lighthouse Church (NLC) facilitates. This actively, radically saved and committed youth group seek to glorify the Lord both privately and publicly, as they grown in character and talent. Dance is their medium, as they strive to attract others to the goodness of God, utilizing songs which have an enticing yet clear message.
They trace their genesis in April 2000. They held a team building concert dubbed “City Lights Bonanza”. Because of the impact of this event, the need to develop the different ministry tools was realized, and dance was one of them.
As a result, the different dance teams that participated in the event came together, birthing City Lights Dance Team. This was in the run up to the first ever City Lights Harvest event, the Extreme Weekend , held in August of 2000.
Extreme weekend paved the way for many other ministry opportunities. Since then they have been privileged to do countless school outreaches, neighborhood concerts and mission trips to places as varied as Kitui and Malindi, as well as conducting National Prisons Outreach all over Kenya. They've also had the opportunity to minister in Zambia.
Since then their numbers have grown significantly to 30-odd members. Yet under the leadership of David Wambugu , they manage this group very cleverly, allowing for different sets of dancers to develop together, and eventually practice and perform as a unit.
Their ministry is based around the truth found in Matthew 28:18-20 which is “to win souls and make disciples”.
Based on this vision, City Lights have, under the direction and leadership of their senior pastor and his wife Don and Amy Matheny, as well as their youth pastors, endeavored to reach the youth through neighborhood cells and youth harvest events such as Extreme Weekend and mini-Extremes, as well as Commotions (City Lights concerts), to name but a few.
They have also been privileged to minister at various special events, both spiritual and corporate, as well as a number of album launches, book launches and the Joyce Meyer Conference.
Excellence is the ultimate aim of City Lights, as they consider choreography, creativity, individual skill development, uniformity and synchrony. Above all else, they seek to ensure that the message of Christ is always communicated.
They recognize and bring out the leadership potential in every dancer, where each dance is member is developed in leadership, choreography and ministry.
They are quick to point out that one of the biggest challenges to their ministry is the fact that it is entertainment based. It is only through the covering of their spiritual authority that they have they managed to safeguard their anointing and ensure a balance between ministry and entertainment.
If ever there was a group that had a catchy yet meaningful slogan, it must be city lights. “ Gauge Haiko” symbolizes to them that nothing is to limit them from accomplishing what they are destined to. In their hearts, they realize that even the sky is not the limit, as they pursue a new and exciting brand of Christian ministry.
Theme Verse
"Let them praise his name with the dance , for the Lord takes pleasure in His people. He will beautify the humble with salvation and adorn the wretched with victory. Let the saints be joyful in the glory and beauty which God confers upon them”
