Holy Battalion is a fast rising, highly talented group of 4 young men and one lady. The group comprises of Dennis Kombo, Salim Cyrus Magala (Salim), Kennedy Adhola Masawa (Onesh)and Anne Marira and apostle Barnado.
The group started off as with the name Militant Christians with three members: Dennis, Onesh and Dalmas. They met up with Mike Olome of Sakata and recorded “Mwanajeshi Blest” in December 2003. Apostle Barnado and Salim then released “Fagia Yote”.
Dennis initially had a very shaky relationship with the Lord until he got a job at the Abba booksellers in 2002. Never in his wildest dreams did he think that he could become a musician though all his siblings are accomplished musicians. He joined his sisters to form a group and confesses initially singing out of tune.
Onesh gave his life to Christ while attending a Word of Life camp during his school vacation in 1997. He is an alumni of Aquinas High School and attends the Kariobangi Baptist Church . Salim started music at the tender age of 12 and performed in different forums to entertain and minister the good news.
Holy Battallion entered a Waumini Radio sponsored Talent search with the song “Upendo featuring Anne, recorded at Hitscore studios with Gideon Kimanzi. Before recording “Upendo” Holy Battalion was an all male outfit and with their new acquisition they effortlessly strode to the final, emerging as the eventual winners. They soon went back into the studio with Gideon Kimanzi and recorded “Hapa Hatutoki”. From this point performance offers started trickling in both locally and regionally, eventually taking them to Tanzania for the H3W. Locally they graced Speed Party 2004 and the Same Reason Project.
Holy Battalion makes their own tracks and are heavily influenced by hip-hop icons 4th Avenue Jones and Cross Movement. With the help of their producer Gideon the group has become far more versatile, using Anne's powerful and mellow voice to explore other genres. Ideally their genre is a fusion of Dancehall and hip-hop kapuka.
They have two other radio singles “Nyumba ya Baba” and ”Ubarikiwe”. Holy battalion has had collabos with Christine Ndela, upcoming Sudanese artiste Manasseh. They single out their home churches for the tremendous support and their families who have supported them through their musical journey.
The group draws inspiration solely from God and his Word, particularly from these two verses.
“Put on the whole armour of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” Eph 6:11
“God has shown us his love by sending His only son into the world, so that we could have life through Him” I John 4:9
Holy Battalion endeavour to write music wholly based on scripture, and that is especially relevant to today's youth who are constantly being bombarded by sexual innuendo from the secular media.
Holy battalion received a big nod of recognition when their song “Upendo” was nominated for the 2005 Groove Award for Song of the year.
