So he gets on to his motorbike, young and reckless. “There's no need to strap on a helmet” he thinks to himself, and quoting from the ‘famous last words almanac' he quips, “What could possibly go wrong?” Well if it wasn't for a faithful friend who came over and personally strapped on the helmet, the world would never have experienced the soulful blend of gospel, R&B and neo-soul that is Lukus Simari's. A horrific accident lay just round the corner, with only that protective headgear saving his young life.
Welcome to Lukus Simari's life!
Today he is an accomplished songwriter and music producer, an excellent performer with extraordinary stage presence. Along with being a skillful pianist and drummer, he co-owns the production company LuZen Productions, being one of the in-house producers for L-Records/PCMG. Not content, he's gone on to establish StreetChurch Ministries, a fast growing organization aimed at bringing church (and God) into the streets. Now with two full albumsunder his belt, 2002's RAIN, and 2005's Street-Church, his music is gaining momentum all over the world. Captivating audiences from the ghetto streets to major cities both in America and Africa , he recently left an audience of over 10,000 at the Kasarani Gymnasium (Nairobi) spellbound with his performance.
But to say his life has been an easy ride would be far from the truth. Born in May 1978, he grew up on the Massachusetts streets. Early in his life his mother went through a rough divorce and had to move him and his brother to a small apartment in the city. As a teen, Lukus turned to gangs, drugs, and alcohol for acceptance: inevitably crime became a way of life for him. By the age of fifteen, Lukus was living on his own and experimenting with and selling all sorts of drugs. He and his friends even began stealing cars and driving them around town, dodging the cops.
Throughout these years, his mother continually prayed for him. Because of the religious oppression that he experienced in his church and school while growing up, Lukus possessed hatred towards anything that had to do with God. However, his mother never gave up on him and in 1997 Lukus finally gave his heart to Jesus. He was at his lowest point, but heard the message of the gospel in a completely different way. When he heard it this time, it became real to him. He then had the opportunity to be mentored in Tulsa , Oklahoma by a worship leader from Church on the Way. During his time away from home, he was able to discover the peace and love of God.
When he returned home, life was still not that easy. Lukus began to revert back to his old, familiar ways. Circumstances tried to destroy his God-given destiny. He started to think that he was above reproach because he seemed to always get away with his offenses.
Just when he thought he could escape his newfound faith, the motorcycle accident occurred. This was a significant moment in his spiritual development, and led him to recommit his life to Christ. He says;
"At that point I could not run from the call of God any longer. I knew my life was in his hands. That's why I can now sing lines like 'His mercy followed me and turned me in the right direction.'"
From that point on, Lukus recognized his destiny and began to change into the man that he would become. Now, God is using his talents and music to reach out to many people. He wants to reach people and let them know that God is bigger than all their problems and that He has provided a way out.
Today, Lukus' music is produced and packaged with the highest standard of excellence and professionalism. It is gospel music at a totally new level, put together with the ears of the whole world in mind. A lot of his songs are more than just hard-hitting soul and groove: they deliver strong, uplifting messages and tell unique stories.
Displaying a genuine passion for music, through his style, sound, and song writing ability, Lukus continually pours his heart and soul into his work.
In his opinion, his greatest personal success thus far is his wife and two children.
"You can play keyboards and sing all you want, but if you can start and maintain a marriage and a family, then you've really got something."
Well, whatever that something is, Lukus no doubt has it!
