What comes to mind when you hear the name Calif? You know, Calif the record label?

Over the past few years parents have ranted and raved as a result of the notoriety this record label has gained because of their explicit lyrics and music videos. As such, even the thought of gospel artists debuting their music through Calif Records would seem unimaginable.

Mr. Boo however, is one unafraid to walk down this path. From Ni Wewe featuring Pilipili, to his latest song Mwisho featuring Lam and Meg C of the Nipe fame, he has shown that he is daring enough to push the envelope when he needs to. Still he remains a beacon of light in a world
perceived by many to be a dungeon filled with darkness.

Born Eric Newton Mwai in Dandora, he later moved to Kerugoya upon the transfer of his parents. He got his schooling at Diplomat Academy and then Kianyaga High, where his talents in acting, singing and dancing won him many a trophy. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, while still juggling his music career.

A little surprising is the act that Mr.Boo gave his life to Christ while in form two - a little later than might be expected, seeing as his father is the senior pastor at the Christian Church International and his grandfather was an Anglican Bishop.

He has six singles to his name, all of which are collaborations. His debut single in 2004 featured an artist known as Sir Vee, while his next release was Wika Boo, featuring gospel mainstay Porqupine. He then went on to work with Harry G and Shifta on the track Wake Up. Even though he is yet to release a full-length album, he has shot three music videos - Bully Man, Ni Wewe and Jina Lake.

Nonetheless, he has been featured on a compilation album with fellow artists that sold thousands of copies. He also owns a recording studio, Boo Records, which he started in December 2005.

In future he plans to collaborate with artists such as SK Blue, Mr. Googz, Daddy Owen and Dice.

Undeniably gifted, focused and tenacious the stars and not the sky will be the parameters that hold Mr boo back,an  artist who does not have plans of  orbiting in obscurity for long.
