Kelly Price, one of the most remarkable voices in modern music and a platinum selling artist, pays homage to her faith with the release of her first gospel CD, This Is Who I Am. This Is Who I Am was recorded at Kelly Price newly formed label EcclectiSounds / Gospocentric through Zomba Gospel. The new album was performed and recorded live in front of a 1,500-person congregation at Price’s former Church in Long Island, NY. Joining to lend a hand were Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Joe Ligon, Donnie McClurkin, Richard Smallwood.
This Is Who I Am merges soul, R&B and even a dash of rock into an exciting, seamless recording which Kelly says “is a tribute to the strength, joy and direction I receive everyday from my relationship with God.” Healing, the CD's first single, is a beautifully layered, soulful song of being broken emotionally and finding God's love to help pick you up, dust you off, and heal your pain. The track borrows a beautiful interlude from Price’s hit song, Soul of a Woman. The title track is another favorite of Price’s. Infectious, upbeat, it is an expression of the loving place Price finds herself in at this time in her life. Says Price, “This song is something that makes me happy when I listen to it. It makes me want to take a drive in an open top car down the coastline…or roller skate. Something uncomplicated and light-hearted. It’s a song about good news.” Other tracks from the album include: The Warning, Nobody But Jesus, Heaven's Best, a contemporary and playful remake of Al Green's timeless Love and Happiness, and God is Faithful - a classic gospel/bluesy duet with Donnie McClurkin. Kelly Price, the Daughter of the late Rev. Joseph Price and Evangelist Claudia Price was born and raised in Queens, NY. Under the watchful eye of her mother and the pastorate of her grandparents Bishop Jerome and Evangelist Joni Norman Kelly was nurtured and developed spiritually by being taught the word of God and the importance of a sustained prayer life. At an early age Kelly’s musical talents began to dominate her life. One day after experiencing deep sadness from a book she read for a black history project in school, Kelly wrote a song to express her unexplainable emotions; her very first song. She was 7 years old. Kelly proceeded to sing on her first recording before the age of 10 and by the time she was 18 she was recording and touring the world with multi-platinum pop diva Mariah Carey. Always a quick study, Kelly watched and learned the intricacies of studio and production work, and soon after began to expand into areas other than just background singing. It is these early years of her professional career that Kelly refers to as her formal education. While her classmates attended college to prepare for their careers she went to work everyday and studied with the entertainment industry’s best to prepare for what would soon be her own amazing career. Throughout her career Kelly has sung for, recorded with, toured with, wrote songs for, arranged and produced music for some of the industry’s luminaries. On the gospel front she has worked with Mary Mary, Richard Smallwood, Donnie McClurkin, Karen Clark-Sheard and Ben Tankard, amongst others. Others include Mariah Carey, Aretha Franklin, Brian McKnight, LL Cool J, Mary J Blige, P Diddy, Brandy, The LOX, and Faith Evans. Others are MASE, Whitney Houston, R. Kelly, Eric Clapton, The Isley Bros and the legendary Ronald Isley just to name a few. Though many record labels initially pursued Kelly as a recording artist it was her connection with Isley and his relentless persistence that convinced her to begin to use her musical talents for herself, resulting in a formal alliance between Isley and Price that birthed her solo career with the 1998 album Soul of A Woman. It featured the #1 smash women’s anthem of the year Friend of Mine. She would follow with the platinum success of Mirror Mirror in 2000, One Family: A Christmas Album in 2002 and the critically acclaimed Priceless in 2003. Millions of albums later this award winning, this Grammy-nominated, singer, songwriter, producer, actress and now author of the book Inscriptions of My Heart, has shown the world but a glimpse of who Kelly Price really is. Price’s voice remains a celestial gift, hand-waving in its potency and deep-rooted passion.
