K-Krew Street Bash | Print |  E-mail

6th April 2007 @ Nairobi Baptist Church Car Park

If there is one outfit that knows how to throw down a good party, it must be the K-Krew. And so it was at their Good Friday street bash. Held at the Nairobi Baptist Church (NBC) car park, it had all the trappings - serious sound and spinning going on, boys at the basketball court doing their thing, girls sitting on various cars in the lot, nyama choma and drinks in plenty, and everyone looking very street.

The Boys…

… and the Girls

In the first hour, the crowd was treated to a continuous stream of hits from the turn-table, being manned by DJ Soxxy . On one side, DJ Moz , the boys - and one girl, who didn't last very long in the fast paced game - were sweating in the afternoon heat as they played ball. On the other side people were catching up, and friends found familiar faces as impromptu ‘dance groups' started sprouting.

At 3pm DJ Moz was on the mic, exhorting the crowd, ‘ Amkeni mbanjuke, ju tumekuja kujibamba'. Needing no second urging, the crowd surged forward to do just that. Looking at the various moves, it was obvious that our churches are teeming with talent. When he touched the wheels of steel halfway into the second hour, the crowd revved up and even those who had been standing on the sidelines quickly joined the ‘groove train'.

The Train

Close to thirty minutes from quarter past three , the sky amazingly darkened and took on a dark grey hue, almost threatening to break into rain. Although this did not stop the party, it was an apt reminder of that day two thousand years ago when the sky darkened as the Lord hung on the cross.

Local spin master Soxxy got his favorite thing going in the third hour. He soon had the crowd carried away in M ugithi and Ngoro Yakwa , followed in rapid succession by Lamo, Uhimidiwe, Afrika and other popular local songs, as the party was turned into a sing along rave of over two hundred voices. Those who did not know the words, and there were a few, satisfied themselves with miming incomprehensibles, and joining in the traditional dances that accompanied the songs. The huge popularity of these jams says a lot about the love that young people have for homegrown talent.

The Crowd is all out

Perfect timing! Reggae artist Admiral Kilosh arrived in his trademark outfit, drawing appreciative glances from the crowd. Soxxy wound up the local session with Fundi Wa Mbao , charging the crowd up even more.

When Moz finally took the party into the fourth hour with reggae and crunk, he had the whole house jamming, crunking, and singing along to Take Up your Cross by Morgan Heritage , as well as Lecrae 's Get Crunk. While reggae has always been a party favorite, crunk seems to be the new wave that has swept Nairobi . Introduced to us by artistes like Lecrae and Canton Jones , it has been localized by our very own Holy Dave who got on stage next with his impressive jam ‘It's Not a Joke' .

The equally impressive duo of Michelle and A-Star followed with ‘Pump Yo Fist' , before A -Star dropped his new single ‘ In the name of Jesus' , a track featuring Michelle. If the cheers he got are anything to go by, this catchy rap song is definitely one to watch out for. Up next was Admiral Kilosh , who gave an energetic performance of ‘fast and pray' and had reggae fans jumping, waving and screaming for all of five minutes. JC , an upcoming artist from NBC took the mic next, also with a crunk number. He displays some amazing talent, and is sure to make headway into the industry especially with the upcoming release of his video.

Come On Let's Dance!

Moz wound up the DJ session at a few minutes to six, causing the crowd to think that the party was over. But to the surprise and pleasure of the revelers, he called on K-Krew affiliates, Jogg C and Gospel Fathers, otherwise known as Zaidi ya Mziki, a group who command a legendary following, and for good reason. Never disappointing, they proceeded to give an electrifying back to back performance of three tracks off their album.

They also got to introduce the other voice in their stable, Mr.V , who performed his new single ‘Niko Busy' .

NBC youth Minister Pastor Majjid was invited to give a word of prayer in thanksgiving for the day. Reminiscent of the story of the wedding at Cana , the best wine seemed to have been left until last, as Zaidi ya Mziki got every soul dancing with Nairobi 's flavor of the moment, Fundi Wa Mbao , ending the afternoon bash on a superb climax.
