He is popularly known as DJ Soxxy to his ardent fans. His real name though, is Jackson Kamau. The fourth born in a family of five, Soxxy has quickly become a darling of his youthful audience, acknowledged for his love for local music.

DJ Soxxy discovered an inclination toward music while still in primary school. After sitting his KCPE exams, he carefully made his selection for high-school on the strengths of the music departments in the schools he intended to join. He ended up in Dagoretti High school which had a respectable brass band.

Immediately he enrolled into the school band, of which he was a member until he graduated from high school. A skillful trombone player, Soxxy was awarded many certificates - among them one of merit for being the best trambone player. His love and creativity for music blossomed and on completion of his secondary education he ventured into the DJ-ing world.

DJ Soxxy embraced salvation on his second day in high school. Today, he admits that the Christian walk is not an easy one, neither is it for the faint hearted. Even though he has had mountain top and valley low experiences, he is steadfast in proclaiming the Lordship of Jesus Christ in his life.

It is said that a man's gift opens doors in front of kings and rulers – Soxxy can testify to that. Unlike many of the practitioners of his trade, he has had the opportunity perform before presidents. Invited for a challenge weekend at a local school, DJ Soxxy had no idea that his audience would include then Head of State, President Daniel Moi. He could hardly believe it, thinking it must be some crazy dream. To add to the moment, the Head of State walks up to him at the end of the show and personally congratulates him on his impressive job on the wheels of steel. When he reminisces about the whole episode, all he says is that it was especially humbling.

Since then he's had the opportunity to perform at many different gigs, and share a stage with many of the country's top acts. As part of the K-Krew family, DJ Soxxy has had an opportunity to do what he considers one of his greatest achievements – touring almost every part of the nation and beyond in outreaches. Soxxy also (to his surprise) won the 2005 Samaritan Award of the Year at the Groove Awards.

“It humbled me, and made me realize that though we may not always see it, people out there appreciate what we do”, he says.

Surprising as it may seem, DJ-ing is not Soxxy’s day job. That is taken up by his other passion, production. He works as a radio producer on a local radio station, a job he confesses to loving almost as much as he loves DJ-ing.

“I believe I’m exceptionally gifted with creativity, and that’s what my job is about. Creating adverts for radio, editing content to be aired, basically working up ways to make radio interesting,” he explains.

In many ways, Soxxy loves making things happen from behind the scenes, and radio production gives him just that. He points out that the reason many young people are not making it where they want to be is because they are not utilizing the gifts God has given them. Soxxy further urges believers to embrace excellence and shun mediocrity, in order to make it in this world.

On inspiration, Soxxy singles out K-Krew chief, DJ Moz, whom he says not only gave him a chance to start off, but has been key in seeing him grow and earn his place. He says:

“It’s a challenge everyday trying to fit into Moz’s rather large shoes! I’m glad for that, because it has made me grow, it has made me appreciate excellence”
As he grows in both of his professions, DJ Soxxy is bubbling over with plans for the future. Apart from going into business soon, Soxxy hopes to one day own a radio station. He firmly believes that he is being prepared now for that time, for a station that will effectively reach out to his generation. In DJ-ing, Soxxy has great plans for promoting local talent. He explains, in part:     Image

“The reason I’m a DJ right now is to promote local talent – I’m looking for underground artists, up-and-comers who no one knows about, and connecting with them. I want to give them a chance to make it…”

His plans include a mix-tape to be distributed to matatus soon, for ‘those young people who would never listen to Christian radio’.

We also found out that in his spare time, DJ Soxxy works as a model for local fashion house, Johari. But that's a story for another day!
