Image Ragga artist Kevoh Yout is one of Gospel music’s fastest rising stars. With his unmistakable pidgin flow and high energy stage appearances, Kevoh Yout (real names Kevin Ochanda) made his mark on the Gospel scene with the hit song Praise Him in 2007. But it has been a long road (that included a detour to hip-hop) that has formed his career path.

Yout’s affair with music started early, largely due to the influence of his father and siblings, who were avid musicians. While he was still in primary school, Yout developed a liking for reggae and ragga, using every opportunity to imitate the artists he listened to often. Yet when he decided to pursue music in form one, hip-hop won the day as both his brothers were successful rappers and he wanted to follow in their footsteps.

A year later though, he discovered it wasn’t working for him and he easily switched to his first love, ragga. He performed at school events and neighborhood ‘battles’, always emerging tops because of his unique delivery. After completing high school in 2004, Yout was upbeat about recording an album before going to college.

However, two things put paid to his plans soon after – one was his salvation in 2005, which saw him shift focus to doing Gospel music; the second, as is the case with many upstarts, was lack of finances. Recalls Yout:

“I had to look for recording deals with different studios, but I got turned down countless times. Still, I never gave up!”

His resilience finally paid off when Phat Records signed him to a one-year deal in late 2006. He went ahead to record several tracks, releasing a five-track pre-album in mid-2007 titled Reaching Out. His performance list has continued to grow, with appearances at many notable events, including the Totally Sold Out concerts as well as the 2007 Kenya Music Week.

Today, Kevoh Yout is on course to releasing his first full-length album, jam-packed with passionate and fresh ragga tracks. He looks set to continue churning hits, with his desire being to “impact the youth with the truth and impregnate their hearts and minds with purpose”.

Look out for this exceptional emcee!
